Film Gauges

Motion Picture Camera Systems + Film

Super 8mm

Camera Systems Owned & Operated:
  • Bell & Howell 1239 XL: Great camera and pressure-plate, combined with a respected lens, pushes the potential of Super8 to the maximum. It can shoot in 18, 24 or 36 frames per second modes or single-frame (1fps).
  • Comes with the stock f/1.2 7-45mm Zoom Lens.
  • Braun Nizo S800: Monumentally important camera to the movement of Super8, having been similar to the one used by artist-filmmaker Derek Jarman. It can shoot in 24fps or 54fps, the latter frame rate is perfect for slow-motion sequences. It is currently unavailable for booking at the moment as it is being refurbished [as of Apr. 2022]
  • All Super8 cameras I have (and indeed most other Super8 cameras on the market) take 50ft Rolls/Loads (which gives approximately 02:30 - 2 minutes and 30 seconds per roll - when shooting at 24fps). There is no limit on each take length, other than the length of the cartridge, as the cameras are powered by their respective electric motor.
Other Camera Systems I Can Operate:
I also have experience shooting with other camera systems, although I don't own them personally. These are rentable via film labs/rental houses such as On8Mil (usually alongside a stock/process-paid package deal they have), Fat Llama or via Facebook Marketplace.
  • Beaulieu 4008
  • Beaulieu 6008
  • Sankyo CME 1100
  • Canon 1014 Auto Zoom

16mm
(Standard-16 or Super-16)

Picture
Camera Systems Owned & Operated:
  • Krasnogorsk-3 (K3): Fully restored, gate widened with re-centered lens for Super 16mm Shooting. Variable Frame Rate: 8-48fps, including High Speed for Slow-Motion Sequences or Single-Frame for Animation.
  • Comes with the Meteor 5-1 f/1.9 17-69mm Zoom Lens, and full kit including filters, grip support, shoulder-mount and original rigging / tripod-mount.
  • The camera takes 100ft Rolls/Loads (which gives approximately 02:30 - 2 minutes and 30 seconds per roll - when shooting at 24fps). Each take can be a maximum of 20-25 seconds in length due to the camera's hand-cranked, spring-wound motor.
Other Camera Systems I Can Operate:
I also have experience shooting with other/professional camera systems, although I don't own them personally. These are rentable via regional rental houses such as ProCameTake2, online  booking services such as Fat Llama or through film cooperatives such as not/nowhere based in London.
  • ARRIFLEX 16 SR3 (Super16)
  • ARRIFLEX 16 SR2 (Standard16)
  • ARRIFLEX 416
  • Aaton LTR
  • Bolex H16
Before booking, check with me what your project's specs/goals are and we'll come up with an economically-sound kit list/package - which must include lenses, filters, mags, stock, video assist (ideally), and all necessary grip equipment/accessories.

35mm

Picture
At this present time, I don't currently own any 35mm Motion Picture Camera Systems although I have operated two before.
  • ARRICAM STUDIO (ST) 35mm
  • ARRICAM LITE (LT) 35mm
As 35mm is a professional (theatrical) gauge of film, often reserved for use by major motion pictures, these are harder and more expensive to rent and require a great deal of expertise - more-so than 16mm and S8mm which are aimed at the prosumer/consumer market.
NB: I have not shot on 65mm (70mm).

35mm motion picture cameras can be hired out from rental houses including:
  • ProCamTake2
  • ARRI
  • Panavision
